The University Colleges (UCs) are a novel concept, in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system in Sri Lanka, opening up more education and training opportunities for youth in our country to acquire skills for employment. These University College of Matara are established to produce highly competent, globally competitive and productive middle level technical and managerial personnel to meet the demand in both domestic and foreign labour markets. UCs will also help to produce a skilled workforce committed to life-long learning and able to manage/adapt change. University Colleges are established under the University of Vocational Technology (UNIVOTEC) Act No. 31 of 2008 and University College Ordinance No. 1 of 2014. University Colleges are under the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training and established as affiliated Colleges of the UNIVOTEC, which offer multi-disciplinary Courses in technical and vocational training in the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) scheme. Students are pursuing NVQ Level V (Diploma) and Level VI (Higher National Diploma) qualifications. Courses are designed for 3 years; Foundation (6 months), Diploma (1 year), On the Job Training (6 months) and Higher Diploma (1 year). University Colleges produce national skills with technical competence as per the booming industry needs of the country and the certification we offer is internationally recognized.

The University College has a Board of Management which will be the academic and executive body of the college to direct, provide expert advice, guidance and support and also monitor the operations of the institution. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Vocational Technology will appoint the Board of Management to the University College.
